Disaster Shakti - Hurricane Ike

Hurricane Ike was the third most destructive hurricane to ever make landfall in the United States. When Hurricane Ike achieved landfall on September 11, 2008 at Galveston, Texas, it earned an Integrated Kinetic Energy Score of 5.6, as compared to Hurricane Katrina's score of 5.1. The Integrated Kinetic Energy score is a measure of the storm surge destructive potential as rated on a scale of 1 to 6. The widespread flooding destroyed thousands of homes and businesses, especially the off-shore oil industries, commercial fishermen and tourism to name a few. Hurricane Ike's financial impact is between $6 and $16 billion dollars.

Members of Disaster Shakti are eager to respond to the myriad of needs of the Gulf Coast residents. They are in the process of organizing a trip to the area to join with local organizations and stakeholders in their relief effort.
