Abstract

Masters and doctoral counselor trainees (N = 16) served immigrant school children enrolled in a middle school's English as a Second Language Program for the experiential training requirement of a multicultural counseling course. The instructor provided broad practice guidelines, as described in the chapter, with the goals that trainees develop multicultural awareness and multicultural alliance/relationship with adolescent clients. Trainees' process notes on ten sessions regarding their interactional process with clients were qualitatively analyzed to understand how trainees operationalized the alliance/relationship competency while offering multicultural service. Themes derived through qualitative analyses were also correlated to trainees' responses to the subscales Multicultural Skills, Multicultural Awareness, Multicultural Relationship, and Multicultural Knowledge of the Multicultural Counseling Inventory (Sodowsky, Taffe, Gutkin, & Wise, 1994), which is a self-report multicultural competency measure. Using a mixed-method design, the instructor attempted to evaluate experiential training in a multicultural counseling course.
