2005 Multicultural Diversity Awards
Department of Clinical Psychology Diversity AwardCheryl Wilczak has been awarded the 2005 Department of Clinical Psychology Diversity Award for her dissertation, “A Study of Gender Differences in New York City Police Officer 9/11 Trauma.” Drs. Roger Peterson and William Halikias nominated Cheryl for the diversity award. In their letter of nomination, they wrote: “Noteworthy is her dissertation and work with women NYCPD police officers following September 11. She has been working in this area for 3 years. In addition, she has done a journalistic article on this topic and published it in an APA newsletter. She has also published a literature review chapter in John Violanti's recent criminal justice book on PTSD. Cheryl has worked with Dr. Roysircar at Arizona State University, Boston College, and Teachers College, Columbia, Cross-Cultural Conference. She has also written a book chapter in 'Multicultural counseling competencies 2003.' (Roysircar, Arredondo, Fuertes, Ponterotto, & Toprek, 2003). Cheryl deserves the award.” MC Center Research and Practice AwardThis year, awards from the Multicultural Center for Research and Practice go to student members of Support for Ethnic and Racial Diversity (SERD) group. The recipients are: Josefina Irigoyen and Anna Berin (1st yr. Psy.D.) - For Josefina and Anna's leadership of SERD, in which capacity they were the MC Center's liaisons to Keene Continuing Education's ESOL program for linguistic minority adults; for their friendship outreach to ESL individuals; for their representation of psychology graduate students' diversity interests at the 2005 Multicultural Summit and Conference, the 2005 Teacher's College, Columbia University's Cross-Cultural Roundtable, and the minority students division of APAGS; for assisting with the MC Center's workshops; and for their courageous social justice value of promoting respect and equity for racial, ethnic, cultural, and language differences in our campus community. Connie Bindewald and Susan Danielson (2nd yr. Psy.D.) - For Connie and Susan's advisement, consultation, and direction to SERD as its senior student members; and for their outstanding contributions as editorial assistants to the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development and to the 2004 APA conference program of the Society for Counseling Psychology, APA's Division 17. Nicole Spanakis (2nd yr. Psy.D.) - For Nicole's constant presence at and encouragement of all SERD activities, such as SERD's research poster development and presentation at the 2004 APA conference and SERD's multiethnic potluck dinners; for her scholarship in multicultural counseling competencies and outcome evaluation; and for her contributions to Spanish translations in the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development. Linda Lee and Kristen Robinson (1st yr. Psy.D.) - For Linda and Kristen's commitment to international professional work; and for their openness to and belief in all possibilities and ambiguities in social justice and psychosocial outreach to tsunami survivors in Tamilnadu, India. Michiko Ishibashi (Applied Psychology) - For Miko for representing SERD as its liaison to the Department of Applied Psychology, AUNE's International Students Committee, and AUNE's Social Justice Strategic Planning Committee; for her assistance with the MC Center's workshops and tsunami outreach; and for her courageous social justice value of promoting respect and equity for racial, ethnic, cultural, and language differences in our campus community. Michael Brodeur (1st yr. Psy.D.) - For Michael for being an ally of SERD; for his efforts to assist with the MC Center website's structural changes; and for his assistance with SERD's research for a 2005 APA conference presentation. | ||||
